MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas men's basketball team fell for the first time inside the friendly confines of Steelman Field House Thursday, snapping a three-game winning streak in Great American Conference play. The Weevils (7-3, 6-3 GAC) could not muster a late rally in the second half, ultimately dropping the contest 79-69.
The game was a back-and-forth battle in the first half with both teams trading buckets until UAM took its largest lead of the ballgame 18-13 with 10:47 to play. A quick 5-0 burst by Harding (3-4, 3-4 GAC) knotted the score, but
Miles Daniels would answer with a three to retake the lead. The Bisons would take control with their response in the final seven minutes of the half outscoring the Weevils 16-9 to take a four point lead into the break.
Daniels had the hot hand for UAM in the opening 20 minutes putting up 10 points to go along with a pair of steals.
Harding took advantage of a strong shooting performance from the field in the second half to maintain the advantage on the scoreboard. UAM shot an impressive 54.5 percent from beyond the arc after the half, but could not overcome the 45 points by the Bisons.
The Weevils struggled to string together enough stops in the second half as Harding managed to push its lead to 13 with 4:55 to play. UAM cut its deficit back into single digits multiple times over the final three-plus minutes, but Harding showed a solid shooting touch from the charity stripe to ultimately put the game away. The 79-69 defeat snapped a three-game win streak by the Weevils.
Daniels led UAM in scoring with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Lemmie Howard and
Kendal Frey each posted double-digit scoring efforts with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Denzel McDuffey paced the Weevils on the glass with seven rebounds to go along with nine points.
