MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas baseball team drops game one of a three-game series against Southeastern Oklahoma State in extra innings Friday. The Weevils reclaimed a late lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not close out the Savage Storm ultimately falling 8-7 in 10 innings at Weevils Field.
Following the loss, UAM falls to 4-8 overall and 4-6 in Great American Conference games. Southeastern improves to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in league play.
The Weevils were first on the scoreboard putting together a four-run second inning. A leadoff single followed by a fielder's choice and a walk set the table for Grant Shepherd to bring home the first run of the contest on an RBI-double off the green monster in right field. Two hitters later with the bases loaded Aaron Gaela cleared the bases with a three-run double off the wall in right to put UAM up 4-0.
Starter Matt Lundh kept Southeastern quiet in the third, but could not hold the Savage Storm off in the fourth allowing a two-run home run that cut the Weevils' lead in half.
Lundh responded by working a 1-2-3 fifth inning before lefty Jared Roberts took over on the mound to start the sixth.
After allowing one run in the seventh, Roberts ran into trouble in the eighth walking back-to-back hitters to start the frame before giving up a three-run home run that put Southeastern on top 6-4. Colby Adkins finished the inning for UAM on the mound leaving one runner stranded.
The Weevils responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-run bomb off the bat of Dylan Borman to tie the game. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases for UAM before Cade Thompson was hit by a pitch to bring in the go-ahead run.
A pinch-hit leadoff home run started the ninth inning for Southeastern knotting the score at 7-7.
UAM put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but after a pitching change by the Savage Storm the Weevils failed to bring home a run sending the game to extra innings.
Ojani Chacon took over on the bump for UAM in the 10th and quickly struck out the first two hitters he faced. However, Southeastern would not go down quietly striking for a two-out solo home run to retake the lead.
The Weevils could not get anything going at the plate in the bottom of the inning ultimately falling 8-7.
Chacon ended with the loss after giving up the solo home run in the 10th inning.
Lundh dealt five innings surrendering two runs on four hits while striking out five in the start. Roberts pitched allowed four runs on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief while Adkins went 1.1 innings giving up one run on one hit.
Kenneth Klier earned the win pitching 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for the Savage Storm.
