BETHANY, Okla. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team picked up a twin bill split on the road against Southern Nazarene Sunday. The Blossoms came from behind to take game one of the day 7-5 before falling 10-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.
UAM is now 9-22 overall on the season and 8-19 in Great American Conference play while SNU moves to 19-17 and 17-10.
GAME ONE: UAM 7, SNU 5
Starter Jamie Franks ran into trouble early for the Blossoms allowing three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning before leaving a pair of runners stranded to limit any more damage.
Franks settled in in the circle to keep UAM in striking distance holding SNU scoreless in the second and third.
The Blossoms took advantage in the fourth tying the game on one swing when Hannah Holdbrook cleared the bases on a three-run triple. Madison Gardiner gave UAM the lead in the very next at bat bringing home Holdbrook with an RBI-groundout.
The Storm tied the game up 4-4 in the bottom half of the frame.
UAM struck to go back in front in the top of the sixth putting together a two-out rally to score three runs. Gardiner picked up another RBI scoring Summer Perkins on a single up the middle before Sydney Webster slapped a two-run double into right field to give the Blossoms a three-run advantage.
Franks allowed SNU to scratch one run across in the bottom of the sixth, but left a runner stranded with the tying run at the plate. She returned to the circle in the seventh working a 1-2-3 frame to close out the 7-5 win for UAM.
Holdbrook led the attack at the plate for the Blossoms going 2-for-3 with three RBI while Gardiner and Webster added two RBI each.
Franks (W, 5-6) picked up the win pitching a complete game allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Chelsea Vandiver (L, 5-9) took the loss giving up four runs on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
GAME TWO: SNU 10, UAM 2
The Blossoms fell behind again to begin the second game of the day as SNU was able to bring home five runs on four hits against Maddie Chalenburg in the circle.
UAM loaded the bases with two down in the top of the second, but ultimately left them loaded without scoring in the frame.
Alexis Pevehouse took over for Chalenburg in the bottom of the inning and kept the Storm off the scoreboard working around a two-out walk.
In her second inning of work, Pevehouse surrendered three runs on four hits and two costly errors by the Blossoms.
UAM got on the board in the top of the fourth after Haley Godeaux roped a one-out triple to right field and came around to score on a fielding error in the next at bat. The Blossoms took advantage of another SNU error in the frame to score again when Perkins raced home after an errant throw on a ground ball to third.
The Blossoms turned to the bullpen in the bottom of the inning bringing in Sam Stephens. She worked a scoreless fourth, but another fielding error in the fifth allowed SNU to plate a run to end the game with UAM falling 10-2.
Chalenburg (L, 2-8) ended with the loss after giving up five runs on four hits in 1.0 inning.
Pevehouse allowed four unearned runs in 2.0 innings pitched in relief and Stephens surrendered one unearned run in 1.2 innings in the circle.
Brooklyn Sparkman (W, 12-7) earned the win allowing two unearned runs across 5.0 innings pitched.
UP NEXT
The Blossoms are back home Friday and Saturday for a three-game series against Oklahoma Baptist. First pitch from Alvy Early Softball Field Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
