MAGNOLIA, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on the road against No. 25 Southern Arkansas Tuesday. The Blossoms lost a late lead in game one to fall 7-6 before struggling to keep the offense going in the second game losing 5-1.
UAM falls to 7-18 overall on the season and 6-15 in Great American Conference contests. SAU improves to 15-6 on the year and 11-4 in league games.
GAME ONE: SAU 7, UAM 6
The offenses were quiet through the first two innings of game one as UAM starter Jamie Franks allowed just one runner to reach base.
UAM got the offense going in the third inning as Bailey Camp and Sydney Webster scampered home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Madison Morrissey. In the next at bat, Grace Neal drove in Katelynn Stamper with a sacrifice fly to left field. Mahayla Mitchell capped the big inning for the Blossoms scoring Morrissey with an RBI-groundout to the shortstop putting UAM up 4-0.
In the bottom of the frame, SAU responded against Franks plating three runs on a pair of home runs cutting the UAM advantage to 4-3.
Both teams put runners on board in the fourth, but failed to score.
UAM went to the bullpen to start the bottom of the fifth bringing in Maddie Chalenburg and the Muleriders quickly loaded the bases before scoring two runs to take the lead. Chalenburg managed to limit the damage leaving the bases loaded to keep the score at 5-4.
The Blossom responded right back in the sixth capitalizing on a throwing error by the SAU catcher that allowed Camp and Webster to cross the plate and put UAM back in front.
Chalenburg surrendered a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the inning before retiring the next two hitters, but the Muleriders did not go down quietly launching a two-out two-run home run to retake the lead going to the seventh inning.
UAM could put together a rally in the final frame falling 7-6 in game one of the doubleheader.
Webster and Camp each collected two hits and scored twice for UAM. Haley Godeaux also notched a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 in the contest.
Chalenburg (L, 2-6) took the loss allowing four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Franks pitched 4.0 innings in the start giving up three runs on three hits while striking out four.
Victoria Taylor (W, 8-1) picked up the win pitching 4.0 innings out of the bullpen allowing two unearned runs.
GAME TWO: SAU 5, UAM 1
Alexis Pevehouse got the start for the Blossoms in game two of the twin bill and ran into trouble in the bottom of the first as the first two hitters reached. Pevehouse limited any damage in the frame to just one run leaving two runners stranded on base.
UAM went quietly at the plate through the first three innings, but carried the momentum of Pevehouse working out of a bases loaded jam into the top of the fourth.
Haley Cornell knotted the score at one roping an RBI-double into right center to score Hannah Holdbrook.
The momentum would be short-lived for UAM as SAU took advantage of a costly error by the Blossoms to plate two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sam Stephens took over for UAM on the mound working a scoreless fifth before SAU would strike for two runs in the sixth on a home run putting the Blossoms down four.
UAM put one runner on the in seventh, but that was all as the Blossoms ultimately fell 5-1 in game two.
Pevehouse (L, 0-3) ended with the loss surrendering three runs, just one earned, on seven hits across 4.0 innings pitched.
Stephens allowed two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Elisa Favela (W, 2-1) earned the win giving up one run on two hits in 6.0 innings on the mound.

The Blossoms travel to Ouachita Baptist for a three-game GAC series Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
