MONTICELLO, Ark. - With its second-consecutive series sweep and sixth-straight win the University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team clinches a berth in the Great American Conference Softball Championship Tournament Saturday. The Blossoms shutout Southwestern Oklahoma State for the third-straight game rolling to another run rule victory 10-0 on Senior Day at Alvy Early Softball Field.
UAM improves to 15-22 overall on the season and 14-19 in GAC play while SWOSU drops to 9-26 and 9-21.
Alexis Pevehouse got the start in the circle for the Blossoms again going for the win in all three games of the series. She ran into a bit of trouble in the top of the second allowing two runners in scoring position with one out, but she bounced back with a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Bulldogs scoreless on the weekend.
After escaping the jam in the top half of the inning, the Blossoms carried the momentum to the plate in the home half of the frame. Grace Neal worked a leadoff walk to set up a two-run blast off the bat of senior Haley Godeaux.
UAM started to pull away in the third putting another crooked number up on the scoreboard. The Blossoms loaded the bases with one out before Summer Perkins was hit by a pitch to bring home a run. Haley Cornell followed with an RBI-single into left center to score Grace Neal. In the next at bat Hannah Holdbrook picked up an RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded. SWOSU made a change in the circle, but after getting the second out of the frame Mackenzie Rogers worked another bases loaded walk that put UAM up 6-0.
Pevehouse continued to cruise in the circle after her dicey second inning retiring seven in a row before allowing two hits in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Katelynn Stamper led off the frame with a walk and a stolen base. The stolen base was the 55th in Stamper's career at UAM which tied her for the most in program history. Caroline Tedder followed with a walk and Godeaux loaded the bases with an infield single. A sacrifice fly by Perkins put the Blossoms up 7-0 before Cornell called "game" launching a three-run shot out to right center giving UAM the 10-0 victory.
With the win UAM clinches a spot in the GAC Softball Championship Tournament for the first time since 2017.
Cornell and Godeaux led the charge offensively for the Blossoms collecting three and two hits, respectively, while each adding a home run.
Pevehouse (W, 5-4) picked her third win of the series and second complete game shutout dealing 6.0 innings in the circle and striking out four.
Alisa Friesen (L, 2-7) took the loss for SWOSU surrendering six runs on three hits and four walks in 2.1 innings pitched.
