UAM wins five set thriller over SAU

The UAM volleyball team won a five set thriller over Southern Arkansas in its first home conference match at Steelman Field House on Tuesday. UAM came out playing aggressive by not letting anything touch the floor combining for 84 total digs and 11 blocks to win the match 3-2.

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team wins five set thriller over Southern Arkansas in its first home conference match at Steelman Field House on Tuesday. UAM came out playing aggressive by not letting anything touch the floor combining for 84 total digs and 11 blocks to win the match 3-2. 

With the win UAM improves to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in Great American Conference play on the season.

In the first set UAM was able to break away from SAU with a six point run, leading UAM to win the first set 25-22. 

Both teams continued to fight hard in the second and third sets, causing the score to remain neck and neck. SAU took every chance to take the lead and managed to break away from UAM early in both sets. UAM fought hard, but fell short in both sets (21-25, 22-25).

In the fourth set both teams struggled to maintain ball control and apply pressure to the other team. UAM was able to take the fourth set from SAU 25-21, despite ending the set with negative hitting percentage. 

UAM showed up to the fifth set ready to finish the match starting the set with a four point lead over SAU. Although UAM started the fifth set with a small lead, SAU continued to make UAM fight for every point they received. UAM battled and left everything they had on the court taking the fifth and final set 15-12 to win the match.

UAM was led offensively by Jamie Agnew with 15 kills while Mikaela Brown and Faith Wilemon followed closely behind with 14 each. 

Mia Smalls led the team tallying 32 assists in the contest.  

On defense, UAM was led by Katelyn Richbourg with 22 digs and Taylor Crighton with 18 digs. The team also registered 11 total blocks as Brown and Tori Hamilton each finished with four solo blocks.

UAM hits the road to face another conference opponent in Ouachita Baptist Thursday, Sept. 23. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
