Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Arkansas-Monticello softball program opened the up GAC play for the 2022 season with a 3-game sweep over Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The Blossoms went into Game 3 with the series win under their belt, but came out with a full sweep over NWOSU as they would win 5-4 on Monday afternoon.
Head Coach
Kyle Lem had this to say about the weekend:
"It was a great weekend of softball. Proud of our players for dealing with a very fluid schedule to get the job done. We really challenged them this week with a renewed focus on our defense, and it came through this weekend for sure. Offensively we had some timely hits, ran the bases well, and converted most of our short game opportunities. Great weekend overall!"
In Game 3, after holding NWOSU scoreless in the first, UAM put up 2 runs.
Madison Morrissey and
Hannah Holdbrook started out the Blossom offense with two singles. Morrissey scored on a SAC bunt from
Caroline Tedder, and Holdbrook puts another run on the board thanks to a right field single from
Haley Cornell.
The two teams would match each other in the second, both scoring a run. Holdbrook crossed the plate thanks to a
Grace Neal single to center field.
Northwestern Oklahoma scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game up 3-3. Tedder and Cornell both scored in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a
Haley Cornell triple and a
Lauryn Davies SAC fly. NWOSU scores their final run in the top of the seventh, but it proved to be not enough as UAM would win the match.
Jamie Franks started in the circle, returning late in the game to close out the win, posting 5.0 innings, and only allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.
Sam Stephens entered the game in fifth, getting 1 innings thrown and a strike out.
Averie Gunther was the third pitcher of the match, tallying 0.1 innings pitched with a strikeout.
