Weevils Leave Central Region Challenge With a Loss to Mavericks

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball team closed out the Central Region Challenge, hosted by Pittsburg State, in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday. The Weevils took on the Minnesota State University-Mankato Mavericks and came out with a 69-57 loss.

Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (0-2) with 17 points, going 8-21 on total field goals and 1-6 on shots from three-point range. He also contributed five rebounds, two assists, and a steal in his 40 minutes played.

Zane Nelson contributed 12 points throughout the game. Nelson went 4-12 on field goals and 4-6 on free throws with four assists, and two defensive rebounds.

Josh Denton put up 11 points of his own in the match, going 4-6 on total field goals and 3-3 from three-point range. Denton also gave UAM a team leading eight rebounds in the match.
 
Mankato (0-2) was led by Malik Willingham with 18 points.

Minnesota State was the first team to put points on the board, with an early three, but were quickly matched by the Weevils as Isaac Jackson followed with a three of his own. The Weevils struggled to find momentum early, falling behind 11-3 before Josh Denton hit UAM's second three on the game. The Mavericks would continue to push the Weevil defense throughout the remainder of the half, seeing as much as an 11-point lead. Arkansas-Monticello clawed their way back within five as the two teams would head to the locker room. UAM hit 12 out of 30 total attempts, with a 3-10 three-point success rate. The Weevils were able to put up 27 points throughout the entirety, down 32-27 as the half closed.

The second half proved to be a higher scoring half for both teams, with each adding at least 30 points to their total score. After two minutes of play, Mankato found the first points of the half, but the Weevils followed up the next possession with a layup from Cole Anderson. With 10:57 on the clock, Monticello would find themselves within one point of the Mavericks' lead. Anderson would hit two free throws for UAM's final points of the contest. Minnesota State would add five points to their lead in the remaining few minutes of the game, eventually taking a 69-57 win over Arkansas-Monticello.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 7 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to Steelman Field House on Tuesday, Nov. 14 to host John Melvin University in their 2023-24 home opener. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
