UAM Comes Up Short to Central Missouri; Dominates against Lincoln University

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team closed out the first day of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic Tournament on Saturday afternoon when they took on both the University of Central Missouri and Lincoln University of Missouri. The Blossoms came out of the first game with a 5-2, loss to the Jennies, followed by a 14-1 win over the Blue Tigers to close out the opening day of the tournament.

Game 1, 7 Innings

Scoring Recap:
Central Missouri struck first, finding two runs in the top of the first inning, The first came from an RBI double to left field, followed by a single to right field to score run number two.

The Weevils struck again in the second, scoring a run off an RBI triple and a fourth run on a single to center.

The Blossoms struck back in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring two runs of their own. Maddie Pfleging drilled a ball into left field for an RBI single to score Hannah Holdbrook. Sophie Wood would follow with a double to center field, scoring Pfleging.

The final run of the game came in the seventh inning when UCM scored a fifth run off an RBI double to center field.

Arkansas-Monticello was unable to respond to the Jennies as the game would end with a 5-2 loss for the Blossoms.

Game 2, 5 Innings

Scoring Recap:
Grace Neal got the ball rolling in the first for the Blossoms, hammering a 3-run home run off the left field foul pole to bring home Sophie Wood and Kennedy Cox.

The Blue Tigers responded in the top of the second with a run of their own when a runner took home on the throw down to second on a steal.

Arkansas-Monticello came back to the plate in the bottom half of the second inning to score 7 runs on Lincoln. Maggie Miller crossed the play on a double to right field from Kammie Walker. Walker would then be drove in on a single to left field from Maddie Pfleging. A single from Sophie Wood and a Double from Grace Neal would score both Kennedy Cox and Maddie Pfleging. Wood scored the fifth run of the inning on an error, followed by Neal and Bailey Camp scoring the final two runs on a SAC from Courtnee Sensibaugh and a Maggie Miller single.

The Blossoms found four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning courtesy of a three run Bomb to dead center field from Bailey Groom to score both Emily Cecil and Lexie Smith. The final run for UAM would come off an RBI double to left from Kammie Walker as Sensibaugh touched home.

The game would conclude with a 14-1 Blossom WIN and a 1-1 split to start the weekend.

Pitching Performances
Game 1
- Maguire Estill started on the rubber in game 1, seeing only three batters with 2 runs allowed on 3 hits.
- Sam Stephens closed out the remainder of the game, totaling 7.0 innings pitched. She struck out 9 batters, with 7 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs allowed.

Game2
- Kyann Woods collected the win in game 2, tossing a 5.0 inning, complete game with 5 strike outs, 1 hit and 1 runs allowed.

- Sophie Wood - 1-for-3 with an RBI double

Game 2
- Grace Neal - 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.
- Bailey Groom - 1-for-1 with a 3-run home run.
- Kammie Walker - 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and a run scored.


The split on the day pushes Arkansas-Monticello to a 3-2 start to the 2023 season.

Arkansas-Monticello is back in Bentonville, Arkansas tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 12 as they take on both Southwest Baptist University and Truman State University to close out the Alvy Early Memorial Classic Tournament. The games are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
