Weevils Open Conference Play with a Win over East Central

ADA, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team closed out their Great American Conference opener on Saturday afternoon; taking on East Central University in game one of their weekend series. The Weevils came out of the first game with an 11-8 win over the Tigers.

The Weevils leave the 2023 home opener with a 4-0 start to the season!

Scoring Recap:
The Boll Weevils were the first team on the board in their GAC opener, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Parker Dorrance crossed the plate as the first run, scoring on an error from the East Central center fielder. Kirk Woolf scored the second run of the inning on a fly out from Reece Reading. Chase Cripps scored the final run of the inning for UAM, touching home on an RBI single from Chaz Poppy.

East Central responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a pair of RBI singles to head into the second with a 3-3 game.

UAM found a run in both the second and third innings to total five on the board. Parker Dorrance scored on a Woolf single up the middle and Poppy scored on an error.

After the Tigers scored three, the Weevils would put a 4-run inning on the board in the sixth, with Kirk Woolf. Chase Cripps, Joseph Brouilette and Reece Reading all scoring on key hitting from the UAM offense.

A double from both Chaz Poppy and DeShaun Cordova in the eighth would bring the final Arkansas-Monticello runs across home.

Game 1 on the weekend would conclude with an 11-8 Weevil WIN and a 1-0 start to the weekend.


Pitching Performances
Derek Potts started on the mound in game 1, totaling 6.0 innings pitched with 6 runs allowed, 8 hits and 4 strikeouts on the day.
Lane Ladner took his turn on the bump, dishing out 2.0 innings pitched for the Weevils. He struck out a batter, with 1 hit and 2 runs allowed.
River Hunt collected his fourth save of the year with a three up, three down inning.

The wins on the day pushes Arkansas-Monticello to a 6-3 overall, 1-0 GAC record start to the 2023 season as they prepare for Sunday's doubleheader.

Arkansas-Monticello is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as take on the Tigers in games 2 and 3 of their conference series. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
