Volleyball Opens Union Volleyball Classic with a Win Over Edward Waters

The Blossoms defeated the Lady Tigers 3-1 for their second win of the 2024 season

JACKSON, Tenn. - Arkansas-Monticello Volleyball took on the Lady Tigers of Edward Waters University on Friday afternoon to open their Union University Volleyball Classic run. They came out of the game with a 3-1 victory.
 
The opening set began with the Blossoms taking a 2-0 lead. UAM would continue their offensive push, increasing their lead to 10-2. The Lady Tigers started to give a response, eventually closing the Blossom lead to within three at 15-12. EWU could not reclaim the lead throughout the remainder of the set, leading to a 25-20 set win for UAM.

Set two saw a 5-1 run from the Blossoms to once again claim an early advantage. EWU pushed their way back into the running, taking the lead over UAM multiple times as play continued. Three straight points for the Lady Tigers gave Edward Waters a 15-12 lead heading into the final stretch. After a battle at the top, UAM would conclude the set on a kill from Mia Smalls to take a 28-26 set win and a 2-0 lead.

Edward Watrers held control of the match for most of the third set. Although UAM came within reach of the sweep, the Lady Tigers prevailed, taking the set, 25-21.

The Blossoms bounced back in the fourth set, scoring eight straight for an early 8-0 lead. EWU clawed their way back into the game, drawing the set at 13-13, followed by a 4-0 run late to trail UAM, 21-20. With a final kill eventually coming from Michayla Black, UAM would take the 25-22 set win and a 3-1 victory.

Natalie White once again led the Blossoms in kills with 16 in the match. Jasmine Welton followed behind with 12 of her own.

Mia Smalls once again led the Blossoms in assists, providing 30.

Defensively, the Blossoms saw Welton also lead with 11 digs. 

UP NEXT
Arkansas-Monticello returns to the court tomorrow, September 14, to continue play in the 2024 Union University Volleyball Invitational. The Blossoms will take on Catawaba at 11:00 a.m., followed by a third, and final, game of the weekend against Southwest Baptist at 4:00 p.m.
