MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team is set to welcome two Oklahoma GAC schools this week for conference play. The Boll Weevils will take on the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene University on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. match on Saturday, Feb. 1 against the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist University. 

"We've got two of the better teams in the league this week," said Head Coach Chad Tapp. "We haven't gotten over the hump but we are playing better both offensively and defensively, just not at the same time. We will need to have a better showing to have a chance this week."

LAST MEETING
Southern Nazarene University -
The Weevils fell to SNU earlier this year by a final score of 67-44. Devin Davis led Arkansas-Monticello with 12 points. Davis hit 5-11 field goals and 2-4 shots from the free-throw line while grabbing four rebounds and a steal. Noah Thomas was the second Weevil in double digits, posting 11 on the evening. Thomas was 4-8 on field goals and 3-3 on threes. He also contributed one assist and two blocks. Arkansas-Monticello committed 13 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

Oklahoma Baptist University -  UAM dropped the last meeting with the Bison in December, 74-56. Seth Grandberry led Arkansas-Monticello with a season-high 22 points. Grandberry hit 10-18 field goals and 2-7 shots from three-point range while grabbing three steals and three rebounds. Noah Thomas was the other Boll Weevil in double digits, posting 13 on the evening. Thomas was 4-12 on field goals, 3-9 from beyond the arc, and 2-6 from the free throw line. He also contributed three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Arkansas-Monticello committed 9 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Southern Nazarene University - SNU leads over UAM with a record of 5-20 since the first match in January of 2013. The first match-up was also the first win for Weevils which produced their largest margin of victory on record, a 72-56 win in Monticello, Arkansas. At home, the Boll Weevils have a 4-7 record, while they are 1-11 on the road in Bethany, Oklahoma, with two losses in neutral locations. The green and white have averaged 59.56 points per game, with 1,489 total points through 25 games played.

Oklahoma Baptist University - Arkansas-Monticello holds victorious over the Bison with an overall record of 9-9 against OBU since the first meet-up in January of 2006. The first meeting occurred between the Bison and Boll Weevils when OBU was in the Sooner Athletic Conference as an NAIA member and UAM was in the Gulf South Conference, with the Boll Weevils winning 66-60. The first GAC meeting would be held 10 years later in 2016, again in Shawnee with an 80-72 win for the Boll Weevils. The biggest win in total points for UAM came in November of 2017, a 97-84 win, however, the largest margin of victory for the Weevils came in  January of 2017, with a 74-54 win in Monticello. At home, the Weevils have a 5-3 record, while they are 4-5 on the road. UAM is averaging 71.33 points per game, with 1,284 points through 18 games played.

LAST TIME OUT FOR UAM

  • UAM went 0-2 for last week, falling to the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas University, 76-63, on Thursday, Jan. 23, and the Wonderboys of Arkansas Tech University, 48-40, on Saturday, Jan. 25.
