MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Arkansas-Monticello Blossoms basketball team has traveled to Clinton, Mississippi, for its final pre-conference game of the season. LAST MEETING
Mississippi College - The Cotton Blossoms came out of the last meeting over the Choctaws with a 62-41 win on November 12, 2019. The game was tight early with both the Blossoms and the Choctaws finishing the first quarter tied, 17-17. In the second quarter, UAM turned things around and never looked back. After MC took a two-point lead to start the second, Jaida Muhammad drained a three to take a one-point advantage. The Choctaws answered with a two, and it was Muhammad again who splashed one from deep to take a two-point lead. Mississippi College kept it tight until the final few minutes of the half. Muhammad hit a free throw with under five minutes remaining, and Kayla Bradley followed that up with a basket of her own. To make it a nine-point lead, Muhammad hit a jumper with two and a half left in the period. To conclude the run, Dezirae King got in on the action, getting a basket in the paint. The Blossoms took an 11-point lead into halftime, 35-24. UAM maintained its offensive attack in the third quarter, increasing the lead to 14 points, largely due to Tidwell, who scored eight of her 12 points in the period. The Blossoms continued to push their lead in the final quarter, increasing it to 23 points. The scoring was spread around through several UAM players, with baskets coming from Hicks, Lynah Bontiff, and Kyiah Julian. UAM would go on to win the game, 62-41. Mekaylan Hicks led the way for UAM in scoring, tallying 16 points. She also was 7-for-8 from the floor, had seven rebounds, and three steals. UAM forced 25 turnovers altogether.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Mississippi College - Tuesday's meeting will be just the seventh time these two squads have faced off on the court together, with the inaugural meeting coming in February of 1975, with the Blossoms finishing with an 84-102 loss. Since that game, the Blossoms and Choctaws have both etched a 3-3 record in the books, with UAM 1-1 at home, and 2-2 on the road in Clinton. The largest margin of victory over the Choctaws came in 2019, with the Blossoms taking the game 62-41. Through six games, Arkansas-Monticello has totaled 416 points, averaging 69.33 per game.
LAST TIME OUT THIS SEASON
Arkansas-Monticello went 2-1 this past week, taking two home wins in front of packed crowds, before falling on the road. The Blossoms took a win over Arkansas Baptist College on Tuesday, November 18, 66-52, before dominating Crowleys Ridge with an impressive 73-24 win on Thursday, November 20. The Blossoms traveled to Cleveland, Mississippi, on Saturday, November 22, for a meeting with the Lady Statesmen of Delta State and came out of that contest with their first loss of the season, 61-57.
