Blossoms Fall in Midweek Games to Mississippi College

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team hosted the Choctaws of Mississippi College Wednesday for an afternoon doubleheader at Alvy Early Softball Field at Ryburn Park. The Blossoms dropped both games to the Choctaws, coming up short in game one, 4-5, and falling 0-11 in the second.

Game 1, 7 Innings

Scoring Recap:
Mississippi College struck first in the top of the first courtesy of a UAM error that advanced a runner home. The Choctaws would add their remaining four runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. A single to the pitcher would plate a run in the third, a two-run home run to right field in the fourth, made it 4-0, and the remaining run for MC would be scored on a wild pitch from UAM. 

The Blossoms would start the rally in the bottom of the fourth adding three to the board making it a two-run game. With bases loaded Maddie Pfleging would reach first on an error from the Choctaws shortstop advancing Lauren Spoon home. An Aubree Goodnight grounder to the pitcher would plate Lainey Tippen, with the final run of the inning coming from Dacia Sexton who reached home via another error from the Mississippi College shortstop.

Arkansas-Monticellos rally stopped after recording just one last run in the bottom of the sixth. Lainey Tippen doubled down the right field line allowing Jade Keaton to reach home from second base.

Pitching Performance:
- Jadyn Barger started on the mound for Arkansas-Monticello, allowing two runs on one hit, and striking out one in her 3.0 innings of work.
- Kyann Woods entered to pitch 2.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits.
- Makenzie Martin closed out the remaining 2.0 innings facing seven batters and only allowing one hit.

Offensive Showcase:
- Lainey Tippen - 2-for-2 with a double, 1 RBI and one run scored.
 

Game 2, 5 Innings

Scoring Recap:
10 of the 11 runs scored for MC tonight came off the Choctaws' bats. Mississippi College plated three runs in the top of the first, two from a home run down the left field line and one off a UAM wild pitch.

MC upped the lead to six, from a full-count home run to left center that plated three. 

The remaining five runs were etched onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, a home run to left field ran in three, and a home run to right field brought in the remaining two.

Pitching Performance:
Kayla Olthouse started on the mound for the Blossoms pitching 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, and three runs on two hits.
- Jade Keaton pitched the next 1.0 inning giving up three runs on three hits. 
- Makenzie Martin was called upon and faced three batters in her 1.0 inning.
- Ronnie Johnson pitched the remaining 1.0 innings allowing five runs on three hits and striking out one.

UP NEXT
Arkansas-Monticello will welcome the Reddies of Henderson State University on Friday, February 28 for the second round of GAC play. The first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Alvy Early Softball Field at Ryburn following the light dedication at 5:30 p.m.
