UAM Athletics Mourns the Loss of Terry Alexander, a Hall of Fame Boll Weevil, True Friend, and Constant Supporter of Athletics

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello Athletics is mourning the loss of Terry Alexander, a former Weevil, record holder, benefactor, and true friend of UAM Athletics.

Terry Alexander was a trailblazer for UAM Athletics, Weevils Football, and the UAM Campus community. He held multiple records at UAM and still sits second overall for career rushing yards, having 3,137 yards throughout the 1975-1977 seasons. Alexander is also second overall in single-season rushing yards, with 1,335 yards in his All-American season in 1977.

"We lost a tremendous man in Terry Alexander," said Athletic Director Hud Jackson. "A great representation of what it is to be a top-notch student-athlete at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Terry was a great human being, great husband, great father, great friend. Just a great person. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him, but he will be deeply missed by his family and friends more. He has done so much for me, personally, and helping us to move forward with (UAM) athletics, and I will never forget that. My heart is broken for his family, but his legacy will live forever."

During his career, Alexander ran into the Boll Weevil end zone for 24 touchdowns. On top of his impressive career and season rushing yards, Alexander had multiple impressive single-game contributions for UAM. He stands second overall in career games with over 100 yards rushed, totaling 12. He also saw two games with 200 or more yards and a career-high 253 yards. His career-high, and third overall in program history, came against Henderson State on November 5, 1977, where he scored three touchdowns. He rushed for 200 yards against Henderson State in 1978 for a season-high in his senior year.

Terry Alexander received a Second-Team All-American recognition for his performance on the field in 1977 as a tailback. On top of his All-American tab, Alexander received First-Team All-AIC and All-NAIA District 17 honors. Due to these impressive achievements on the field, Alexander was inducted into the UAM Hall of Fame in 2001 as an individual and again in 2019 as part of the 1979 AIC champion football team.

The Terry Alexander Corridor, located inside the Kenneth H. Hunt Athletic Performance Center, was dedicated to Alexander in 2024, paying tribute to his extraordinary contributions to the athletics department over the years. Most recently, on April 14, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Hud Jackson announced that Terry Alexander's No. 24 jersey would be retired at UAM, with a dedication to be held during the first home football game on September 13. Alexander became just the sixth player in Arkansas-Monticello's football history to have his number retired, and the first in nearly a decade.

"We look forward to retiring No. 24 in his honor, not only for what he accomplished but for who he was," said Jackson. "Terry chose UAM, and UAM is proud to have chosen him. His continued support and commitment to pushing our athletic department forward spoke volumes about who he was."

Off the field, in 1975, Mr. Alexander made history as the first African American student to enroll in and earn his Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the UAM School of Forestry. He was also the first football player to balance the demanding schedule of a student-athlete with the academic rigor of the forestry program.

In 2021, UAM selected Alexander as the 59th Distinguished Alumnus for his professional achievements and ongoing support of the university. The UAM Foundation Fund named Alexander to the board of directors on March 10, 2022. In October 2022, Terry Alexander was named one of the 2022 UAM African-American Alumni Elites.

The entire athletics department and UAM community mourn his loss and extend condolences to his wife, Marian, and his family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Terry Alexander will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 117 Maul Rd in Camden, AR.

Visitation will be Friday, August 29, from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, 119 Van Buren St in Camden, AR. The family hour will be 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church.
