MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils basketball team is set to head to Oklahoma for their final GAC meetings with the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University and the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State Univeristy on Thursday, February 19 and Saturday, February 21.
LAST MEETING
Southwestern Oklahoma State - The Weevils fell the last time out, 62-74. Southwestern Oklahoma won the first half of the game, as the Bulldog's offense proved much more efficient in the opening 20 minutes, outscoring Arkansas-Monticello. The Bulldogs were 13-27 on shots (48.15%), compared to the Weevil's 6-24 (25.0%). The teams would head to the locker room at the half with UAM trailing, 36-21. Arkansas-Monticello found success in the second 20-minute period, outscoring the Bulldogs 41 points to 38. The Weevils were 12-25 on shots (48.0%), compared to Southwestern Oklahoma's 10-19 (52.63%). Unfortunately, the effort proved not enough, as the final buzzer rang, concluding the game with a 74-62 loss for UAM.
Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello, posting 18 points in the game. Jackson hit 7-15 total field goals on the day, one three-pointer, and 3-6 free throws. He also contributed seven total rebounds in his 37 minutes, along with five assists.
Ashton Price was the second Boll Weevil in the double-digits, scoring 17 points on the afternoon. Price hit 2-10 field goals, one three-pointer, and 12-12 from the line, while grabbing five defensive rebounds, one assist, and a steal.
Josh Smith saw 13 points posted as the final Boll Weevil in the double-digits. Smith hit 5-9 field goals and 3-4 free throws, while grabbing seven defensive rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Arkansas-Monticello committed 11 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
Northwestern Oklahoma State - Arkansas-Monticello fell short the last time against the Rangers, 59-64. Arkansas-Monticello fell behind early on the scoreboard in the opening half of the game; however, a jumper from
Giancarlo Valdez put the Weevils within one. Northwestern Oklahoma remained in control as the teams exchanged baskets back and forth. The Weevils flipped the script in their favor thanks to a three-pointer from
Jakob Zenon to claim the lead with 02:51 left to play. The teams would head to the locker room at the half with the Weevils on top, 37-29. Arkansas-Monticello carried its momentum into the second 20-minute period, extending its lead to a game-high 12 points; however, Northwestern Oklahoma responded with 15 unanswered points to gain control of the matchup. With 09:35 left to play, the Weevils cut the deficit to two points on four separate occasions; however, the effort proved not enough as the Rangers stayed in control for the remainder of the game. Arkansas-Monticello came out of the contest with a 64-59 loss.
Ashton Price led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (7-8, 3-6 GAC), posting 20 points in the game. Price hit 7-15 total field goals on the day and 6-8 free throws. He also contributed ten total rebounds in his 38 minutes, along with four steals, three assists, and a block.
Jakob Zenon was the final Boll Weevil in the double-digits, scoring 14 points on the evening. Zenon hit 5-10 field goals and four three-pointers, while grabbing three rebounds. Arkansas-Monticello committed 14 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Southwestern Oklahoma State - Tip-off on Thursday, the 20, will commence the 31st meeting between UAM and SWOSU, with the Weevils looking to bring the overall record back to within one, which currently stands at 14-16. The overall record dates back to November of 1987, the very first match-up, which ended in a loss for the Weevils, 59-79. Since that day, the Weevils have amassed a 7-7 home record, 7-6 road record, and are 14-13 in GAC play. The largest margin of victory was set in February of 2017, a 101-70 win over the Bulldogs. Since game one, the Boll Weevils have bucketed 2,166 points, averaging 72.2 points per game.
Northwestern Oklahoma State - This will be the 27th overall meeting between these two squads, with the Rangers holding a slight edge over the Weevils, 11-15. The very first meeting between UAM and NWOSU occurred on December 1, 2012, a 54-68 loss for the Weevils. Since that date, they have built a record of 6-7 at home, 4-8 on the road, and 10-15 in overall conference play, with one neutral game occurring in the GAC tournament in March of 2018. The largest margin of victory for UAM currently stands at 93-73, set in January of 2020. Through 26 games, the Weevils have put up 1,836 points on the board, averaging 70.62 points against the Rangers per game.
