TOPEKA, KS. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team opened the Ichabod Classic with a rematch against Drury University, falling 3 sets to start the weekend.
FIRST SET (25-12 DRURY, DRURY leads 1-0)
Drury and Arkansas-Monticello traded points early, with UAM taking a quick 2-0 lead with back-to-back kills from
Sophia Grubbs. The teams remained close before the Panthers went on a 9-1 run to pull ahead, 14-6. UAM slowed momentum with a block from
Brianna White and
Ja'Miah Thomas, followed by a service ace from
Maelie Cooke, but Drury continued to control the set. Grubbs and
Summer Stephens added late kills before the Panthers closed out the set, 25-12.
SECOND SET (25-7 DRURY, DRURY leads 2-0)
Grubbs started strong with a kill to open the set. Drury took control early in the second set, building a 14-3 advantage. UAM continued to battle with kills from Grubbs, Garcia, and Stephens. White later added a kill, while Grubbs picked up two more late kills for the Weevils. Drury maintained its lead throughout the remainder of the set and closed it out for a 25-7 win.
THIRD SET (25-23 DRURY, DRURY wins 3-0)
UAM came out strong in the third set, jumping to an early 6-1 lead behind a pair of kills from Garcia, a block from White and Stephens, a Garcia service ace, and a kill from Grubbs. The Weevils continued to control the set, extending their advantage to 10-5 before Drury began to battle back. UAM held onto the lead behind kills from Garcia and White and a service ace from
Ella Cline, eventually taking a 15-10 advantage. Drury chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set at 18-18. From there, the teams traded points in a tight finish, tying again at 20-20 and 21-21. Stephens helped UAM pull within one at 23-22 before Drury scored two of the final three points to take the set, 25-23, and secure the match, 3-0.
