MAGNOLIA, Ark. -- The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team traveled to Magnolia, Arkansas, for another Great American Conference meeting Thursday afternoon, against Southern Arkansas University. The Weevils fell to the Muleriders in three sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-22)
FIRST SET (25-21 SAU, SAU leads 1-0)
Arkansas-Monticello came out strong in the opening set, using a pair of service aces from
Ella Cline and a kill from
Sophia Grubbs to jump out to an early 3-0 advantage. Southern Arkansas responded to tie the set at 3-3, but the Weevils continued to battle as
Isabella Garcia recorded a pair of kills to help UAM regain the lead at 7-6. The two teams traded points before Garcia and Grubbs added kills to spark a UAM run, giving the Weevils an 11-8 advantage and forcing an SAU timeout. UAM continued to hold the lead behind multiple kills from Grubbs, pushing the advantage to 13-10. Southern Arkansas responded with three straight points to tie the set at 13-13, but Grubbs answered with another kill before
Jalen Scroggins added one of her own to put UAM ahead, 15-14. The Muleriders battled back to take a 16-15 lead before the teams continued trading points, eventually reaching a 17-17 tie. SAU then used a 3-0 run to pull ahead, 20-17. The Weevils fought back behind a kill from
Hannah Hubbard and a pair of SAU attack errors to tie the set at 20-20. A SAU service error later evened the score again at 21-21, but the Muleriders closed the set with four unanswered points to take the opening frame, 25-21.
SECOND SET (25-21 SAU, SAU leads 2-0)
UAM opened the second set with momentum, jumping out to a 6-2 lead behind kills from
Sophia Grubbs and a service ace from
Ella Cline. Southern Arkansas responded to cut into the lead, but the Weevils stayed in front as SAU errors helped UAM push the score to 10-7. The Muleriders battled back with a 4-0 run to take an 11-10 lead, but UAM quickly answered. Grubbs recorded a kill before
Isabella Garcia followed with a kill and service ace to give the Weevils a 14-11 advantage. Southern Arkansas responded with three straight points to tie the set at 14-14, setting up a back-and-forth battle through the middle of the frame. Grubbs added back-to-back kills to help UAM regain the lead, while
Evalyn Dang later connected on a kill to put the Weevils ahead 17-15. The two teams continued trading points before an SAU attack error gave Arkansas-Monticello a 19-18 advantage. The Muleriders answered with four straight points to move ahead, 22-19. UAM continued to battle, using a Garcia block and a kill from Dang to pull within three at 24-21, but SAU responded with a kill on the following point to close the second set, 25-21.
THIRD SET (25-22 SAU, SAU wins 3-0)
The Weevils found their rhythm early in the third set, gaining a 6-2 advantage with kills from Sophia Grubbs, Jalen Scroggins, and Isabella Garcia. Arkansas-Monticello kept the pressure on as a Scroggins block and a pair of Mulerider errors helped stretch the lead to 9-5. Grubbs continued to provide an offensive spark, recording three kills as UAM maintained a 13-10 edge. Southern Arkansas chipped away at the deficit and eventually evened the frame at 13-13. UAM quickly regained control behind kills from Kylie Miller and Scroggins, while Ja'Miah Thomas and Garcia combined for a block to push the Weevils ahead, 17-14. Garcia added another kill to make it 18-15 before the Muleriders shifted the momentum with four unanswered points to grab a 19-18 lead. The teams went point-for-point late in the set, with Grubbs putting UAM back on top, 21-20. SAU answered to move ahead, 22-21, before a service error knotted the score at 22-22. The Muleriders ultimately secured the final three points of the frame, taking the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
