UAM VOLLEYBALL ENDS SEASON WITH 3-2 LOSS TO CBU

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team concluded the 2010 season Friday with a 3-2 loss to Christian Brothers at home on Senior Day.

Final game scores were 25-20, 13-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 11-15.

With the loss, UAM ends the 2010 campaign with an overall record of 3-27 and an 0-12 mark in the Gulf South Conference, while CBU improves to 17-13 overall and 9-3 in the GSC. The Lady Bucs have clinched a berth into next weekend’s GSC Championship Tournament in Pensacola, Fla.

The Cotton Blossoms started the match by hitting .316 in the opening set with 17 of their points coming off kills. That percentage fell drastically in the second set after the team had 12 errors and only six kills for a -.194 percentage.

The Lady Bucs took advantage of UAM’s miscues by hitting .226 in the second set, and the team also recorded five of their 11 total blocks.

The third set was controlled by CBU’s .316 hitting, with the Lady Bucs having 16 kills and only four errors. On the other side of the net, UAM had 10 kills and five errors.

Down 15-8 in the fourth set, UAM used a 7-0 scoring run capped by a kill from senior Monica Perkins-Miller to bring the set to a 15-all tie. UAM kept its hot-hitting streak alive by posting seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-18 lead. Perkins-Miller, senior Dayna Moyer and true freshman Bailie Jedlicka all recorded a kill in the final rally to force a match-deciding game five.

In the final set, CBU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before UAM reached the scoreboard on junior Melissa Reed’s kill. After a UAM timeout, the Lady Bucs’ strong offensive attack continued, led by Hailey Gillis’ three kills to put CBU on top 9-2.

UAM answered with a 7-2 scoring run to bring the set to within two points at 11-9, but two UAM attack errors and two kills by CBU’s Michelle Hein ended UAM’s season without a conference victory for the first time in school history.

UAM had three players reach double-digits in kills, led by Perkins-Miller’s 14 kills on 44 attempts. Reed and true freshman Mollie Cagle had 10 kills each. Senior Dayna Moyer trailed closely with nine kills.

Senior Vikki Crisco ended her collegiate career with 46 assists in the loss, keeping her second all-time at UAM in assists. She leaves the program with 2,352 career assists.

Senior Stephanie Hatten padded her school record of career digs with 19 in the loss to bring her career total up to 1,581.
