BLOSSOMS DOWNED BY LADY RIDERS, 70-64

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team suffered a 70-64 loss to Southern Arkansas Thursday night at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

The Cotton Blossoms (6-12, 2-4 Gulf South Conference) struggled in the first 10 minutes of the first half and the last 10 minutes of the second half, allowing the Lady Muleriders (2-13, 1-4 GSC) to capture their first conference win.

The Lady Muleriders started the first half on a 5-0 run before UAM reached the scoreboard on junior Jerica Hubbard’s jumper at the 16:34 mark. SAU grew its lead to as much as 10 points in the first half before the Cotton Blossoms closed out the first half on a 10-2 scoring run to hold a 34-26 lead at the break.

The Cotton Blossoms took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Chelsea Johnson with 4:30 remaining in the first half.

UAM started the second half by opening up its largest lead of the game in the first minute at nine points on a free-throw shot by junior Channon Haywood.

SAU regained the lead for the final time with 4:49 remaining in regulation.

Junior Chelsea Johnson led the Cotton Blossoms with 14 points. Haywood was the only other UAM player to reach double-figures with 13 points.

SAU was led by Cha’Kia Lee’s game-high 16 points. Kmaria Hobbs and Shenelda Livingston added 14 points each.

The Cotton Blossoms finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field (25-of-65), 31 percent on three-pointers (5-of-16) and 56 percent at the foul line (9-of-16). SAU shot 39 percent from the field (26-of-66), 22 percent on three-pointers (4-of-18) and 74 percent at the foul line (14-of-19).

UAM returns to action this Saturday, January 29 at home against nationally third-ranked Delta State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
