Haywood, Channon action vs DSU

3RD-RANKED LADY STATESMEN PUSH PAST UAM, 76-55

MONTICELLO – No. 3 Delta State used 45 percent shooting and a plus-10 rebound margin to defeat the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team 76-55 on Saturday at Steelman Field House.

The Cotton Blossoms (6-13, 2-5 Gulf South Conference) hung with the Lady Statesmen (18-1, 6-1 GSC) for the game’s first 12 minutes, holding a 16-14 lead with 8:44 left in the first half. DSU answered with a 20-5 scoring run over the next six minutes to take a 13-point lead.

UAM outscored DSU 8-2 throughout the remainder of the first half to trim the Lady Statesmen lead to seven points at 36-29 at halftime.

In the second half, UAM cut DSU’s lead to four points at 42-38 with 15:03 remaining in regulation following a made jumper by junior Channon Haywood. It was the smallest advantage for DSU for the rest of the contest. The Lady Statesmen grew their lead to 20 points with just over four minutes left, and took a 23-point lead, their largest advantage of the game, with 1:15 remaining.

Haywood led all scorers in the contest with 22 points, highlighted by an 18-point first half output. The St. Louis, Mo. Native was 10-of-20 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line. She also added six rebound and five blocked shots to her totals. Junior Alex Hart was the only other UAM player to reach double-figures with 12 points.

DSU was led by Veronica Walker’s double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sheena Johnson and Shameka Russell also reached double-figures with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The Cotton Blossoms finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field (25-of-67), eight percent on three-pointers (2-of-24) and 60 percent at the foul line (3-of-5). The Lady Statesmen shot 45 percent from the field (26-of-58), zero percent on three-pointers (0-of-5) and 75 percent at the foul line (24-of-32).

UAM returns to action this Thursday, February 3 in Memphis, Tenn. against Christian Brothers to start the second round of GSC games. Thursday’s tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Canale Arena.
