FIFTH-RANKED GOLDEN SUNS DOWN UAM, 87-67

MONTICELLO ­– No. 5 Arkansas Tech used 59 percent field goal shooting to defeat the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team by a final score of 87-67 on Saturday inside Steelman Field House.

The Golden Suns (19-2, 8-1 Gulf South Conference) shot 58 percent in the first half and 59 percent in the second for their final mark of 59 percent (30-of-51). The Cotton Blossoms (6-15, 2-7 GSC) struggled in the first half at 30 percent, but finished the contest at 38 percent (23-of-61) after a 45 percent shooting performance in the second period.

ATU’s scoring was highlighted by 42 points in the paint, 27 points off turnovers (21 committed by UAM) and 26 points off the bench. The Golden Suns placed five scorers in double-figures, led by Katie Horsman’s game-high 19 points off the bench. Natalia Santos added 16, Jessica Weatherford had 15, Jenny Vining had 14 and Laura Beth Anderson had 10.

For the Cotton Blossoms, junior Alex Hart led the way with 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Sophomore Erica Williams recorded her first double-digit game of the season with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Junior Jerica Hubbard reached double-digits in rebounding with a game-high 11 boards.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action on Monday, February 14 in Arkadelphia, Ark. against Henderson State in a game originally scheduled for this past Thursday, but was postponed due to inclement weather. Monday’s tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
