BOLL WEEVILS SPLIT HOME OPENER WITH LYON

MONTICELLO ­– The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split its first two home games of the season with a 14-9 win and 2-1 loss against Lyon College on Saturday at Weevils Field.

In the first game, the Boll Weevils (5-1) batted through the lineup in the bottom of the third inning to score eight runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from junior Wayne Hawkins. Junior Demarcus Rieves was 2-for-2 in the inning with a pair of doubles, one of which produced UAM’s final run of the frame.

Hawkins came through again in the bottom of the sixth with another two-RBI double to give UAM a six-run lead heading into the last inning. The Memphis, Tenn. native finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Reece Cross (2-0) earned the win, allowing eight runs (five earned) off seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Coda Medlin added 2.2 productive innings of relief, allowing only one run off two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

In the second game, the Boll Weevils left nine runners stranded and were held to only three hits to suffer their first loss of the season.

UAM scored its lone run in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by sophomore TJ Cox to plate junior Chase Stokes, who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

The Scots (5-4) tied the game on an RBI double from Michael Armenteros in the top of the third inning, and took their final 2-1 advantage on a solo homerun from Mickey Sepanek to lead off the top of the fifth inning.

Senior Brandon Miller (1-1) was saddled with the loss after tossing a complete-game, allowing two runs off nine hits with three strikeouts and only one walk. Lyon’s Josh McNatt (2-0) earned the win, also in complete-game style, allowing one run off three hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

The Boll Weevils and Scots conclude the four-game series with a double-header on Sunday at noon.
