UAM BASEBALL TAKES LYON SERIES WITH SUNDAY SWEEP

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team completed its home-opening four-game series with Lyon College with 6-3 and 8-6 wins on Sunday to capture the series victory.

In the first game, Lyon (5-6) took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI double by Aaron Thornton. The Boll Weevils (7-1) were held without any offense through the first three innings, but a solo homerun by junior Chase Stokes in the fourth broke up the perfect game and started the UAM rally.

UAM took advantage of a pair of back-to-back errors committed by Lyon in the bottom of the fifth to plate four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI triple by junior Wayne Hawkins in the second to last at bat of the frame.

The Boll Weevils added their final run on an RBI sacrifice bunt by junior Tino Trujillo in the bottom of the sixth to plate junior Demarcus Rieves, who reached on an error by the Lyon third baseman earlier in the inning.

Sophomore Eddie Smith (2-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs (two earned) off seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Senior Brett Stewart picked up his first save of the season, tossing a perfect seventh inning.

In the second game, UAM plated one run in the first, two runs in the second and three runs in the third to stay ahead of Lyon, which scored a run in the second and third innings to make it 5-2 after three full frames. UAM’s run total in the third inning came on one swing, a three-run homerun by sophomore TJ Cox, his first of the season.

The Boll Weevils were retired in order in the next two innings before putting the final touches to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, one run coming on an RBI single by junior Tanner Laran.

Sophomore Brent Noble (2-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs off five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in the first five innings. Stewart picked up his second save of the day, getting the Boll Weevils out of bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh without allowing a run or a hit.

The Boll Weevils return to action next weekend at home against Missouri S&T, starting with a double-header on Saturday, February 26. First pitch is set for noon at Weevils Field.
