BIG INNING NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO MULERIDERS

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team scored five runs in the second inning, but was held scoreless throughout the remainder of the game in a 10-5 loss to No. 30 Southern Arkansas on Sunday.

An RBI single by senior Jon Tatum started the second-inning rally for UAM (9-7), followed three at bats later by a three-run homerun from freshman Justin Hollis, his first and only hit of the season.

Junior Tanner Laran was responsible for UAM’s final run in the inning with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to plate junior Fernando Garcia, who singled in the previous at bat and stole second.

 SAU (12-5) plated two runs in the first, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh. Logan Williams had the most productive day for SAU, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate, including a pair of homeruns. Williams finished the game with six RBI.

Senior Brett Stewart (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing the final five SAU runs off four hits with no strikeouts and three walks in 1.2 innings of work. SAU’s Joey Cifuentes (1-0) earned the win in relief, keeping UAM scoreless off five hits in the middle 5.1 innings, while striking out six.

Laran and freshman Taylor Smith were the team leaders for UAM in hits with three each. Smith was a perfect 3-for-3 and reached base in all of his plate appearances with three singles to left field and a walk.

The Boll Weevils are back in action this Tuesday, March 15 at home for a single nine-inning game against Indianapolis. First pitch is set for noon at Weevils Field.
