STATESMEN TAKE TWO TO START SERIES

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team lost twice to Delta State on Saturday with final scores of 16-5 and 8-1 in the first Gulf South Conference games of the 2011 season for both teams.

In the first game, the Statesmen (14-9, 2-0 GSC) scored in every inning except for the first, but used an eight-run fifth inning to capture a margin large enough for a run-rule victory. In the fifth, all but one run was unearned due to a throwing error by UAM third baseman Demarcus Rieves.

Junior Chase Stokes led the way for UAM (9-10, 0-2 GSC) in the first game, going 2-for-3 at the plate, highlighted by a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth. Sophomore TJ Cox also had two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth.

UAM’s other run in the first game came on an RBI fielder’s choice from junior Sam Wilkins, scoring freshman Taylor Smith, who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

Senior Reece Cross (3-2) took the loss for UAM, while Aaron Newcomb (4-3) earned the win for DSU.

In the second game, UAM’s lone run came on an RBI groundout by Stokes to score junior Fernando Garcia, who doubled earlier in the inning.

The Statesmen scored one run in the first, one in the third and three in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Senior Brandon Miller (1-3) was saddled with the loss, while DSU’s Brandon Hardin (3-2) earned a complete-game victory.

The two squads are set to conclude the three-game series on Sunday (3/20) with a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
