STATESMEN COMPLETE TRIFECTA, WEEVILS FALL 17-5

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State scored six runs in the bottom of the third and seventh innings on Sunday, aiding to a three-game sweep over the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team with a final score of 17-5.

The Boll Weevils (9-11, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) reached the scoreboard first with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by junior Chase Stokes and an RBI fielder’s choice from junior Fernando Garcia.

The Statesmen (15-9, 3-0 GSC) answered with the first of four multi-run innings, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third. DSU batted through its lineup with four RBI hits and two RBI sac flies.

DSU added two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, the biggest blow coming on a two-RBI triple by Michael Niemann in the fifth.

UAM answered in the top of the sixth on a two-run homerun by freshman Taylor Smith, his second round-tripper of the year. Then in the top of the seventh, Stokes tallied his second hit and his second RBI of the game with a double to left, scoring junior Sam Wilkins, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

DSU’s Kellen Bozeman finalized the game’s scoring with a game-ending grand slam homerun in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Eddie Smith (3-2) took the loss for UAM, while Josh Branstetter (3-1) earned the win for the Statesmen.

The Boll Weevils step out of conference play this Tuesday, March 22 to host Belhaven University for a single nine-inning game starting at 1:30 p.m.
