WEEVILS SUFFER SATURDAY SWEEP: 14-1, 19-7

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered a pair of Gulf South Conference losses against Arkansas Tech at home on Saturday with final scores of 14-1 and 19-7.

The Wonder Boys (17-11, 5-0 GSC) tallied 18 hits in the first game, while holding the Boll Weevils (9-14, 0-5 GSC) to only two for the lopsided victory. ATU scored five runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and added another five-run inning in the ninth.

UAM scored its lone run on an RBI single from sophomore TJ Cox in the bottom of the third to score junior Fernando Garcia, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. Junior Tanner Laran was responsible for the other UAM hit with a base hit to left field in the bottom of the ninth.

Senior Reece Cross (3-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) off 12 hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in 6.1 innings of work. ATU’s Cody Hatman (1-0) earned the win after allowing one run off two hits with three strikeouts and five walks in the first 7.1 innings of the contest.

In the second game, ATU scored in every inning and bested its game one outing with a total of 22 hits in the second half of the twinbill.

UAM’s scoring came on a two-run homerun by junior Mark Mitchell in the second, a three-run homerun by junior Paul Parsels in the fourth and back-to-back RBI singles by freshman Keenan Jumper and junior Sam Wilkins in the sixth.

The Boll Weevils tallied a total of nine hits, led by Parcels, who finished 2-for-4 after also collecting a double in the second inning. Cox recorded a pair of doubles for UAM, one to right field in the fourth and one to center in the sixth.

ATU’s first three spots in the lineup all had three hits, but the team’s leading run-producer was Michael Rezin, who recorded all four of his RBI on one swing, a pinch-hit grand slam in the sixth.

Senior Brandon Miller (1-4) took the loss for UAM, while Danny Parker (5-2) earned the win in complete-game style for ATU.

The two squads conclude the three-game series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday (3/27) at 1 p.m.
