Rieves, Demarcus congratulated

WEEVILS OUT-HIT WONDER BOYS IN 14-10 LOSS

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team had 18 hits in a losing effort as Arkansas Tech captured a 14-10 win on Sunday to complete its three-game Gulf South Conference sweep over the Boll Weevils.

UAM (9-15, 0-6 GSC) jumped out to a quick lead with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun by junior Demarcus Rieves. Juniors Chase Stokes and Mark Mitchell had consecutive RBI singles later in the inning.

Rieves struck again in the second to give UAM a 6-2 lead with an RBI single to center field, scoring junior Fernando Garcia, who doubled earlier in the inning.

The Wonder Boys (18-11, 6-0 GSC) rallied with two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-6 lead. Nate Wilder and Nick Makris each collected two RBI during the three-inning comeback. Wilder had a solo homerun in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth, while Makris tallied a solo homerun in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth.

UAM pulled to within one in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by sophomore TJ Cox to score Garcia, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.

ATU used the long ball in the eighth and ninth innings to finalize the scoring. Landon Sullins blasted a two-run shot to right in the eight to give his team a 10-7 lead, while Makris completed his productive day with his second round-tripper of the game, this time a three-run shot to center to give the Wonder Boys a 14-7 lead.

The Boll Weevils rallied in the ninth for three runs on an RBI double by junior Paul Parsels, an RBI by Stokes and a pinch-hit sac fly by senior Richard Atwood.

Sophomore Eddie Smith (3-3) was tabbed with the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) off 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks in the first five innings. Tyler Dowse (1-2) earned the win for ATU after allowing only one run off six hits with four strikeouts and one walk as his team took the lead in the middle innings.

UAM is back in action next weekend in Searcy, Ark. for a three-game GSC series against Harding starting with a double-header on Saturday (4/2). First pitch is set for noon.
