Farmer, LA shoots vs HU

CHARGERS CATCH FIRE IN 2ND HALF, WEEVILS FALL 79-75

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville shot 71 percent in the second half to defeat the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team 79-75 in the opening round of the 2011 Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament.

The first half featured 11 lead changes and four tie scores, with the Chargers (26-3) holding a four-point advantage of 35-31 at the break.

The Boll Weevils (14-13) outscored UAH 13-8 in the first four minutes of the second half, taking a one-point lead of 44-43 with 16:21 remaining in regulation on a pair of free-throws by senior Jerrell Boswell.

Less than two minutes later, UAM took another lead, this time on a layup by junior LA Farmer to give his team a 48-46 lead with 14:23 left.

The Chargers answered by grabbing what was then their largest lead of the game of seven points with 7:27 remaining on a layup by Zane Campbell, who extended the UAH lead to nine-points two minutes later on a three-pointer. UAH reached a double-digit lead at the 5:34 mark of the second half and held that 10-point lead until the 3:11 mark, when LA Farmer scored six consecutive points, unanswered, to trim UAH’s lead to four points with 1:01 remaining.

Including Farmer’s six unanswered points, the Boll Weevils outscored UAH 11-4 from the 3:20 mark to the 26 second mark, capped by a three-pointer from junior Sergio Crowe to trim UAH’s lead to three-points at 74-71.

UAH’s Jamie Smith made a pair of free-throws, and then added another two points at the line after being fouled following an errant inbound pass by UAM’s D’Angelo Dean.

Farmer answered with a layup, Boswell created a turnover and Dean made a pair of free-throws with seven seconds remaining to put UAM down by three. UAH’s Josh Magette sealed the win for UAH with a made free-throw attempt after being fouled on the inbound.

Farmer tallied a game-high 30 points for his second straight 30-point game and fifth of the season. The Carrollton, Ga. native made 10-of-19 field goals, including two three-pointers. He finalized his scoring with eight points at the free-throw line on 10 attempts. Crowe and Boswell also reached double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Crowe had a game-high nine rebounds.

UAH was led by Jaime Smith’s 21 points, followed by Elliot Jones with 15, Zane Campbell with 14 and Josh Magette with 12.

The Boll Weevils finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field (26-of-58), 28 percent on three-pointers (8-of-29) and 75 percent at the foul line (15-of-20). UAH shot 59 percent from the field (24-of-41), 58 percent on three-pointers (11-of-19) and 74 percent at the foul line (20-of-27).

Despite the loss, first-year head coach Allen Sharpe and the Boll Weevils end the 2010-11 campaign with the 24th winning season in program history.
