ERRORS PREVENT GSC SWEEP, WEEVILS FALL 15-2

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team committed five errors and allowed 11 unearned runs in a 15-2 loss to Henderson State on Sunday to prevent a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep.

UAM (12-19, 3-9 GSC) tied its season high in miscues, while also struggling at the plate with only five hits.

The first 11 runs for the Reddies (16-16-1, 5-6-1 GSC) were unearned due to errors committed in the first, third and fourth innings. HSU scored one run in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk and added the final three runs of the game in the top of the seventh with the help of two walks and a wild pitch.

Junior Tanner Laran smashed his second homerun of the series in the bottom of the first to cut HSU’s lead to two runs. UAM’s other score can in the bottom of the sixth in the form of junior Sam Wilkins, who singled, moved to second on an errant pickoff throw, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the HSU shortstop.

Junior Wayne Hawkins was the only Boll Weevil to have more than one hit in the loss with a 2-for-3 outing, including a double down the right field line in the fourth.

The Reddies were led in hits by Gip Hendrix, who went 3-for-5. Lee Harris and Kendal Norman tied for the team-high in RBI with three each.

Sophomore starter Eddie Smith (3-4) was tabbed with the loss after allowing the first 11 runs, all unearned, off nine hits with four strikeouts and only one walk in 3.1 innings of work. Brittain Diamond (2-3) earned the win for HSU in complete-game style, allowing two runs (one earned) off five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The Boll Weevils step out of GSC play with a trip to Grambling, La. this Wednesday (4/13) to face Grambling State in a double-header starting at 4 p.m.
