WEEVILS THUMP BUCS ON SENIOR DAY

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team totaled 31 hits, including 10 for extra bases, in 17-12 and 14-6 wins over Christian Brothers on Saturday at Weevils Field.

With Saturday’s wins, the Boll Weevils become the first UAM team since 2005 to win at least two conference series in one season. The 2005 Boll Weevils captured four series victories.

In the first game, it looked as if the Buccaneers (14-21-1, 0-13-1 Gulf South Conference) were in good position to capture their first conference win of the season, leading 5-1 after the first three innings.

CBU eventually led 7-3 before UAM (14-20, 5-9 GSC) scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth on two swings, a three run homerun by junior Chase Stokes and a grand slam homerun by senior Richard Atwood. Atwood’s round-tripper gave UAM its first lead of the game at 10-7.

The Bucs pulled to within one run on two different occasions in the final three innings, but the Boll Weevils exploded for six more runs in the bottom of the eighth, half coming on a three-run homerun by junior Tanner Laran.

Senior Brandon Miller (2-4) earned the win in six innings of work, and senior Brett Stewart picked up his fourth save of the season by holding onto UAM’s lead for the final three innings. CBU’s Alex Sikes (3-4) took the loss in relief after giving up Atwood’s go-ahead grand slam in the sixth.

In the second game, UAM scored in each the first four innings, including a five-run fourth for a 13-4 lead. UAM scored three in the first, highlighted by a two-run single from Stokes. In the second, the Boll Weevils added four runs on run-producing at bats from Laran, Atwood, senior Jon Tatum and junior Sam Wilkins.

In the third, UAM scored one run on an RBI bases-loaded walk by junior Wayne Hawkins to score Wilkins, who singled earlier in the inning.

UAM’s five-run fourth inning included three consecutive run-producing doubles. Junior Fernando Garcia started the rally with a three-run double to center, followed by back-to-back RBI two-baggers from Laran and Hawkins.

UAM’s final run of the day came in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Tatum.

CBU’s Lans Hardin and Tyler Dunn each had three hits. The Bucs had a total of nine hits in the game.

Senior Reece Cross (6-3) earned the win in complete-game fashion, allowing six runs (four earned) off nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. CBU starter Jon-Michael Davis (4-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs off 11 hits in the first 2.1 innings.

Prior to the first game on Saturday, UAM held a special ceremony to recognize the seven seniors on the baseball team that are playing their final home conference series of their careers. The 2011 baseball senior class includes Brett Stewart (Pine Bluff), TJ Weed (Mangham, La.), Reece Cross (Pine Bluff), Jon Tatum (Walnut Grove, Miss.), Richard Atwood (Vancleave, Miss.), Chris Kirkscey (East Bernard, Texas) and Brandon Miller (El Dorado).

The two squads conclude the three-game series on Sunday (4/17) with a single nine-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
