WEEVILS FINISH OFF BUCS FOR GSC SWEEP

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team completed a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep over Christian Brothers with a 12-6 win on Sunday at Weevils Field.

The Boll Weevils (15-20, 6-9 GSC) broke a 3-all tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout by junior Sam Wilkins and an RBI single from junior Fernando Garcia. UAM led 5-3 at that point and never trailed throughout the remainder of the contest.

Garcia struck again as a part of UAM’s five-run sixth inning with a two-run homerun to left, his first round-tripper of the year.

The Bucs (14-22-1, 0-14-1 GSC) scored one run in the first, two in the third, two in the eighth and one in the ninth. The Bucs were held to only five hits, two coming from Rob Maxwell.

Garcia and junior Tanner Laran led the Boll Weevils with three hits each. Garcia finished 3-for-6 with three RBI two runs scored. Laran was 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Juniors Tino Trujillo and Wayne Hawkins added two hits each in the win.

Sophomore Eddie Smith (4-5) earned the win after allowing five runs (four earned) off four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in the first 7.1 innings. CBU’s Lee Paine (2-4) took the loss.

With Sunday’s win, the Boll Weevils have now posted three-game sweeps over CBU in back-to-back seasons.

UAM returns to action this Tuesday (4/19) for the final home game of the 2011 season. The Boll Weevils are set to face Central Baptist College in a non-conference double-header starting at noon at Weevils Field.
