WEEVILS WHIP MUSTANGS IN MID-WEEK DOUBLE-HEADER

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team wrapped up its home portion of the 2011 schedule on Tuesday with a pair of wins over Central Baptist College. Final scores were 6-2 and 19-6.

In the first game, the Mustangs (20-19) scored one of their two runs quickly with an RBI double from Tim Watson in the top of the first. UAM (17-20) was held scoreless in the first, but answered with three runs in the second on consecutive RBI singles from juniors Sam Wilkins and Fernando Garcia. Senior Jon Tatum scored in the inning on an error by the CBC shortstop.

The Boll Weevils added their final three runs of the contest in the fourth on an RBI single from junior Tino Trujillo, an RBI double by junior Wayne Hawkins and a sacrifice fly out from junior Tanner Laran.

Sophomore Brent Noble (3-1) earned the win, holding the CBC offense to only two runs off four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in the first five innings. CBC’s Wade Beck took the loss.

In the second game, UAM’s scoring was highlighted by a 10 hit, 12-run fourth inning. UAM sent 17 batters to the plate during the rally before the Mustangs could record three outs.

UAM also scored one run in the second, four in the third, and one in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Senior Richard Atwood had a career day, going 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and four runs scored in the final home game of his stint as a Boll Weevil, along with six other seniors. Garcia and junior Mark Mitchell were close behind with three hits each.

UAM totaled 23 hits in the victory with eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit.

Freshman Coda Medlin (1-2) kept the Mustangs scoreless on only two hits, while striking out three and walking none in the first four innings. CBC’s Matthew Honeycutt took the loss.

The Boll Weevils return to action this Friday and Saturday (4/22-23) in Arkadelphia, Ark. against Ouachita Baptist for a three-game Gulf South Conference series starting with a double-header on Friday at noon.
