WEEVILS SPLIT WITH NO. 20 HARDING, SNAP LOSING STREAK

SEARCY, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team upset 20th-ranked Harding with an 8-2 win on Saturday to snap a 14-game losing streak. Harding beat UAM 10-7 in the first game of the double-header.

UAM (10-16, 1-7 Gulf South Conference) took advantage of a pair of Harding (27-6, 6-2 GSC) errors in the top of the first inning of the second game to score six runs to grab an early lead. Senior Jon Tatum had the big hit of the inning with a two-run single to left field.

Harding’s pitching and fielding found consistency over the next three innings, retiring UAM in order in each of the second, third and fourth frames.

The Bisons scored their two runs on one swing, a two-run homerun by Trent Kinnear in the bottom of the second inning.

UAM added its final two runs and finalized the scoring in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from sophomore TJ Cox and a sacrifice fly from senior Richard Atwood.

Senior starter Reece Cross (4-3) went the distance for UAM, allowing two runs off five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Brodie Brumley (2-3) took the loss for Harding after allowing eight runs (four earned) off six hits with five strikeouts and four walks in the first six innings.

In game one, the Boll Weevils rallied from down three runs on two different occasions to take a 6-4 lead following a three-run seventh inning. Harding rallied with six runs over the next two innings to seal the victory. UAM left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

UAM first reached the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, when junior Tanner Laran scored from third base on a double-play. In the sixth, UAM pulled to within one run of the Bisons on a two-run homerun by Atwood, his second round-tripper of the year.

In the seventh, UAM took its lead with an RBI single from Laran and a two-run single from junior Demarcus Rieves.

Junior Chase Stokes led off the top of the ninth with a solo homerun to left field to finalize UAM’s scoring.

Freshman Coda Medlin (0-1) took the loss for UAM after allowing the go-ahead runs in the eighth. His final line read five runs allowed off two hits with one strikeout and three walks. HU’s Lucas Waddell (6-0) earned the win in relief after allowing two runs off four hits with one strikeout and one walk in the final 2.1 innings.

The two squads conclude the three-game GSC series on Sunday (4/3) with a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m.
