TIGERS SHUTOUT WEEVILS TO COMPLETE SWEEP

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Baptist Tigers defeated the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team 10-0 on Saturday to complete a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep.

UAM (17-23, 6-12 GSC) was held to five hits in Saturday’s loss, two coming from junior Fernando Garcia, who had singles in the first and fifth innings. Garcia, along with sophomore TJ Cox were the only Boll Weevils to reach scoring position. Garcia moved into scoring position after his single in the first on a groundout. Cox, who was hit by a pitch in the second, moved into scoring position on a single by junior Chase Stokes.

The Tigers (17-26, 8-10 GSC) took an early lead with four runs in the first, then added another two runs in the second, two in the fourth and the final two in the seventh for the run-rule victory. OBU finished with 11 hits, three each coming from Cass Via and Brock Green.

Sophomore Eddie Smith (4-6) took the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) off six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in the first 3.1 innings. Taylor Burns (3-4) earned a complete-game victory for OBU.

The Boll Weevils conclude the 2011 season next weekend in Magnolia for a three-game GSC series against Southern Arkansas, starting with a double-header on Saturday (4/30) at 3 p.m.
