WEEVILS LIMITED IN LOSSES TO MULERIDERS

MAGNOLIA, Ark.
– The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team was held to three hits in each of its losses to Southern Arkansas on Saturday. Final scores were 18-0 and 9-1.

In the first game, the Muleriders (31-13, 14-6 Gulf South Conference) scored five runs in the first, six runs in the third and seven runs in the sixth to capture the run-rule victory.

The Boll Weevils (17-25, 6-14 GSC) were set down in order through the first three innings, before junior Wayne Hawkins ended Dan Bream’s perfect game bid with a walk in the fourth. Senior Richard Atwood followed with a single through the left side of the infield to end the no-hitter.

UAM’s other two hits came on an infield single from junior Fernando Garcia in the sixth and single to left from sophomore TJ Cox in the seventh.

Bream (11-2) went five innings for the Muleriders and allowed only one hit while striking out six and walking only one. Senior starter Brandon Miller (2-6) struggled to find the strike zone, walking six batters leading to nine runs off just three hits in the first two innings.

In the second game, SAU had another successful first inning, scoring five to take an early lead. The Muleriders added one run in the second, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to cap their scoring. UAM’s lone run came on an RBI single from freshman Justin Hollis in the top of the seventh to score Atwood, who reached on error earlier in the inning.

Hollis was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Atwood was responsible for UAM’s other hit with a double to right center in the top of the second.

SAU’s Doug Shields (6-2) earned the win after striking out 10 and keeping UAM scoreless on only two hits through the first six innings. Senior Reece Cross (6-5) took the loss for UAM after allowing eight runs off 10 hits in the first four innings.

The two squads are set to conclude the three-game series with a single nine-inning contest on Sunday (5/1) at 2 p.m., weather permitting.
