SIX-RUN SEVENTH NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO BLAZERS

JACKSON, Miss. -- The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it was not enough as host team Belhaven held on for a 13-7 win on Wednesday.

The Boll Weevils (10-18) were held without a run for the first five innings before senior Richard Atwood’s bat came alive in consecutive plate appearances. The Vancleave, Miss. native put UAM on the board in the sixth with an RBI double to right center to score junior Wayne Hawkins, who singled earlier in the inning.

Atwood struck again in the six-run seventh with a bases-clearing double to center. He finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.

In addition to Atwood’s production in the seventh, Hawkins, senior Jon Tatum and sophomore TJ Cox also had run-producing at bats.

The Blazers (30-11) scored their 13 runs off 15 hits, led by Lake Eiland, Derek Tortorich and Ryan Saunders, all having three RBI in the game.

Freshman Coda Medlin (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs off eight hits with one strikeout and no walks in the first three innings. Mark Husband (3-1) earned the win for the Blazers after allowing four runs off four hits with four strikeouts and four walks in the first 6.1 innings.

The Boll Weevils return to Gulf South Conference action this weekend at home in a three-game series against Henderson State, starting with a double-header on Saturday (4/9) at noon.
