JACKSON TOSSES THIRD SHUTOUT, FORCES WINNER-TAKE-ALL GAME

WINTER PARK, Fla.
– Junior Kayla Jackson tossed her third shutout of the day in a 3-0 win over West Alabama on Sunday in the finals of the NCAA South Sub-Regional Tournament.

The Cotton Blossoms (46-15) and Lady Tigers (36-17) will meet again on Monday (5/16) at 9 a.m. central time, with the winner advancing to next weekend’s super regional in Huntsville, Ala. against Alabama-Huntsville, which won its sub-regional with a 10-2 win over Valdosta State on Sunday.

In the win over UWA, the Cotton Blossoms struck early with a run in the top of the first on an RBI groundout from sophomore Faith Lund to score freshman Beth Johnson, who led off the game with a walk.

In the second, UAM added its final two runs in consecutive at bats, an RBI groundout from senior Kendra White and an RBI single from Johnson.

Johnson was 2-for-2 against the Tigers, while freshman Summer Huddleston and senior Sarah Hayslip also collected two hits in the win.

Jackson (29-8), who collected her 12th shutout of the season, allowed four hits, struck out five and allowed one walk, which was her only walk allowed in all of Sunday’s games combined. The Hallsville, Texas native also broke a school record by drawing a walk in the top of the second inning to set the new mark for a single-season with 35.

UWA’s Kristen Skinner (19-7) took the loss after allowing three runs off three hits with one strikeout and three walks in the first 1.2 innings.
