BLOSSOMS CONCLUDE SEASON WITH 3-1 LOSS TO WEST ALABAMA IN SUB-REGION TITLE GAME

WINTER PARK, Fla.
– The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team concluded the 2011 season with a 3-1 loss to West Alabama on Monday in the NCAA South 2 Regional Championship game.

With the season coming to an end, the Cotton Blossoms (46-16) now look back over the second most successful year in the program’s 16-year history in terms of wins with 46, tying the 2007 mark. The 2007 Cotton Blossoms went 46-20.

West Alabama (37-17), which advances to next weekend’s super regional in Huntsville, Ala., stormed out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, highlighted by two-run triple from Jessica Powell. UWA’s other run of the inning scored on a passed ball.

UAM finalized the scoring with one run in the second on an RBI single from junior Katie Bowman to score sophomore Faith Lund, who doubled to left field to lead off the inning, and moved to third on a single by junior Randa Perry.

Freshman Summer Huddleston followed Bowman with a single to right center for UAM’s fourth consecutive hit to start the inning. That single loaded the bases, but UWA starting pitcher Kristen Skinner struck out UAM’s next three batters to end the inning.

UAM loaded the bases once again in the third inning, this time with one out before a popup by Bowman and a strikeout by Huddleston ended the threat.

For the game, UAM left nine runners stranded. Junior Kayla Jackson’s pinch-runner, Jessica Dickey, was left on second in the fifth, while the team left runners on first and third in the top of the seventh.

Jackson (29-9) suffered the loss after allowing three runs off seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks her complete-game outing. Skinner (20-7) went the distance for UWA and earned the win after allowing one run off seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
