Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM women’s basketball team got a big 68-47 win over Henderson State this evening at Steelman Field House.
Henderson State (12-10, 5-7 GAC) jumped out to an early lead thanks to a pair of jumpers before Taylor Clark got the Blossoms (8-13, 4-7 GAC) on the board with a three-pointer two minutes in. The Lady Reddies pushed their early lead as high as five before the Blossoms could gain the upper hand.
Candace Virgadamo hit a layup to tie the score at 11 with 14:04 remaining and then hit a foul shot after Vanessa Pieper sent her to the line to give the Blossoms their first lead of the game. They would not trail for the rest of the game.
UAM closed the first half on a 6-0 run to take a 31-20 lead into the locker room and they continued to grow their advantage throughout the second half. The Lady Reddies got no closer than their nine-point halftime deficit. Chelsea Johnson scored her 20
th point of the night at the foul line to set the final at 68-47.
Johnson led all scorers with 20 points and got the double-double with 11 rebounds, including ten defensive rebounds alone. Taylor Clark added 17 points while Candace Virgadamo and Channon Haywood finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Blossoms shot 37-percent on the night, going 17-of-45 including 6-of-11 from three (54-percent). They shot 28-of-34 from the foul line for 82-percent. HSU shot 30-percent from the floor, 16-of-25 while going 4-of-21 from three (19-percent). The Lady Reddies went 11-of-20 from the foul line for 55-percent.
UAM returns to the court next Thursday in Weatherford, Oklahoma as they take on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
