MONTICELLO, Ark. – Southern Arkansas won the series-opening doubleheader today at Weevil Field 6-0 and 4-1.
The Muleriders (14-10, 4-4 GAC) blanked the Weevils (11-12, 1-6 GAC) in the opener, 6-0, thanks to strong effort from SAU’s Doug Shields. The senior right-hander shut down the UAM offense in the game, allowing just three hits in the complete game.
Danny Loya, J.D. Deloach, and Christian Gallegos had the three hits for UAM, but the Weevils could never get more than a single hit in any given inning. SAU scored the bulk of their runs in the fifth inning.
Kenny Marshall had six scoreless innings in his seven, but gave up three hits and two inning-leading walks to the Muleriders allowing the five runs to cross the plate. He finished allowing seven hits in seven innings with five walks and three strikeouts. Eddie Smith and Brent Noble came in for an inning each in the eighth and ninth.
In game two the Riders jumped out again, scoring one run in the second and another in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead before the Weevils could get on the board themselves. Paul Parsels got a leadoff single to short and scored two batters later when Christian Gallegos drove a single to left.
It was the only run they could muster on the day, but SAU hung two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh to set the 4-1 final. James Baune got the second complete-game win of the day for Southern Arkansas as Russell Watts took the loss for the Weevils.
Watts went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on ten hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Josh Chism came on in the seventh to finish the game, allowing no hits and one walk in four batters faced.
The two teams will meet tomorrow afternoon for the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Weevil Field.
