Box Score Game 3
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM baseball team led for six innings today, but could not hold on as Southern Arkansas defeated the Weevils 9-6 to take game three of the Great American Conference series.
The Weevils (11-13, 1-7 GAC) got off to a big start, hanging three runs on the Muleiders’ starting pitcher before he could record a single out. Taylor Eaves got things started with a leadoff double to right. The next three UAM batters got singles into the outfield to score the three runs before SAU (15-10, 5-4 GAC) pulled their starter, Janson Carr.
The sophomore gave up three runs on four hits in four batters faced before Cory Roper came in to relieve him. Roper got out of the jam in the first with no more runs scoring, but ended up giving up three runs of his own in seven innings of work. UAM got two more runs in the second off a Danny Loya double down the left field line that scored both Chism and Christian Gallegos.
The final UAM run came in the fourth inning after Gallegos led off with a triple to center and came home on a throwing error from the cutoff man. SAU battled all day long, however, never allowing the Weevils more than a three-run lead. They got two in the second, two in the third, and two in the sixth to tie the score before getting the winning run in the top of the seventh. Trey Buck got a double down the left field line with a man on second to give SAU their first lead of the day.
Southern finished with two insurance runs in the top of the eighth to put the series sweep away, 9-6. They had 15 hits on the day to UAM’s nine. Each team had one error. Roper got the win for SAU with three runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Christian Gallegos took the loss for the Weevils after going two innings with three runs on five hits with no walks and one strikeout.
The Weevils will take to the road this Tuesday to take on Grambling State in Grambling, Louisiana. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
