WEEVILS SWEEP DOUBLE FROM HENDERSON STATE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 1 | Game 2

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The UAM baseball team swept the opening doubleheader of the GAC weekend series with Henderson State, 6-5 and 4-1, today in Arkadelphia.

UAM (13-13, 3-7 GAC) got on the board in the top of the first, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and subsequent steal from Taylor Eaves, but were trailing 5-2 going into the ninth inning. The Reddies (13-13, 4-7 GAC) gave up four runs in the top half of the inning to let the Weevils come away with the game one victory, 6-5.

J.D. Deloach led the inning with a walk and Tyler Walker was hit by a pitch to get two on with nobody out. A Taylor Eaves single loaded the bases with the Weevils’ first hit of the inning. Christian Gallegos hit into what should have been a routine grounder to short that was booted by the HSU fielder, allowing Deloach and Walker to score. Danny Loya got a sacrifice fly to left to score Eaves and Hunter Allday scored the winning run with a single to left that scored Josh Chism from second.

Game two went much smoother for the Weevils, with no last-inning rallies needed for the 4-1 win. UAM scored one in the first on an Allday double, one in the third off a Chism sacrifice, and two in the seventh off a Gallegos double and another Chism sac fly. HSU’s only run came in the bottom of the seventh, spoiling the complete-game shutout for Chism.

Eddie Smith got the win in game one after coming into the game in relief of starter Kenny Marshall. Smith gave up no runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in three innings of work. Josh Chism went the full seven in game two, allowing just one run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The two teams will face off again in the series finale at 1 p.m. in Arkadelphia.
