Box Score 3 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM baseball team came back from 7-5 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning today to take game three of the GAC-opening three-game series with the Harding Bison today at Weevil Field.
The Weevils (11-6, 1-2 GAC) took the early lead in the third inning when Josh Chism doubled to left center, driving in Wayne Hawkins and Danny Loya. Hunter Allday gave UAM the 4-2 lead in the next at-bat with a single to first that scored Chism from second.
Harding (14-3, 2-1 GAC) tied the score with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Weevils charged right back in the home-half of the inning with a two-out single and stolen base from Christian Gallegos. The UAM shortstop was brought home with a single from Danny Loya to retake the lead, 5-4.
Harding scored three more runs in the top of the fifth, two on two outs – both unearned following an error by T.J. Cox that allowed the runs to score and hand the Bison the two-run advantage in the late innings.
The sixth, seventh, and eighth innings passed without further scoring by either team as both Josh Chism and HU’s Ryan Modglin got quick outs in each frame to keep the score at 7-5 going into the final UAM at-bat.
Gallegos led off the ninth with a single to center, followed by a Taylor Eaves double to left to put Gallegos on third. Danny Loya tied the game with a shot into deep center field that plated both Gallegos and Eaves.
Wayne Hawkins drew an intentional walk from the Bison, bringing up the pitcher Chism. Josh laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt back to the mound to move Mark Mitchell to third as the winning run. Hunter Allday was intentionally walked to set up the force at all bases, but the move would come back to haunt the Bison as Modglin walked Tyler Walker to send in the winning run for UAM, 8-7.
Josh Chism got the win in five innings of relief work, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three. Ryan Modglin took the loss for Harding going 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
The win salvaged the opening series for the Weevils, who dropped the series-opening doubleheader yesterday 9-12 and 7-6 to the Bison. UAM’s ninth inning comeback came up just short in the second game yesterday, as the Weevils were only able to plate one run, stranding two on the paths.
UAM will return to action this Wednesday in Magnolia as they take on the Southern Arkansas Muleriders in a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
