MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM baseball team dropped a 11-3 decision today to Delta State in non-conference action.
The Weevils (15-23) were held hitless by Delta State’s pitchers through the first seven innings of play. For their part, the Statesmen put up two runs in the third off two hits and the first of four UAM errors on the day by third baseman Tino Trujillo.
The game did not get out of hand until the sixth inning. The Statesmen (24-10) converted four hits into six runs before tacking on three more in the top of the seventh off three more hits.
UAM broke the shutout in the bottom of the seventh for their only four hits of the afternoon. After getting two outs to start the inning, Hunter Allday got the Weevils’ first hit with a single to right. Trujillo followed with a shot up the middle to put two on for Paul Parsels. The senior out of Memphis got the Weevils on the board with a bases-clearing double to right. He crossed the plate for the Weevils’ final run of the game off a Justin Hollis single to left.
Chris Guzman took the loss for UAM, going five innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Ricky Winters got the win for Delta State, pitching five innings of no-hit baseball for the Statesmen before handing over the reins.
The Weevils will host their final home series of the 2012 season beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. as they take on the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm in a GAC doubleheader.
