Game 1 | Game 2
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM baseball team faced an uphill battle this afternoon in the opener of the three-game GAC series with the conference-leading Southeastern Savage Storm, falling 7-2 and 4-2 on Senior Day.
The Savage Storm (29-11, 21-8 GAC) jumped out in the first game to a 2-0 lead before the Weevils could muster a response. UAM (15-25, 4-15 GAC) got two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at two runs apiece.
Danny Loya led the inning with a single to second base. That was followed by a walk to Josh Chism and Hunter Allday singled to load the bases with no outs in the frame. Chase Stokes drove in Loya with the third hit of the inning with a roller up the middle. The Storm helped out with an error by the third baseman that allowed Johnny Wolf to reach and score Chism from third.
Unfortunately, the Weevils could get no more runners home after a strikeout, fielder’s choice and a force at the plate to end the inning. SOSU responded in the next to innings with five unanswered runs to secure the win in game one. They finished the game with nine hits to the Weevils’ five.
Josh Chism took the loss in game one in six innings of work. The senior righty surrendered all seven Storm hits and runs with two walks and five strikeouts in 29 batters faced. Eddie Smith threw the seventh, giving up no hits with one strikeout in four batters. Brent Noble closed the game in the eighth and ninth, allowing two hits with no walks and three strikeouts in eight batters.
Game two saw the Weevils scoreless until the fourth inning, already down 4-0. SOSU got two runs in the first and one each in the second and fourth to pull away early in the seven-inning game. UAM broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth off a Danny Loya single and a sacrifice fly from Josh Chism that scored Taylor Eaves and Christian Gallegos.
Kenny Marshall took the loss in game two, after giving up the two Storm runs in the first. He came out of the game after the inning with shoulder pain. Eddie Smith threw 4.1 innings in relief, giving up the other two Southeastern runs. Christian Gallegos threw the final 1.2 innings allowing just one more hit.
The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon with a single game. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. for the Weevils’ final home game of the 2012 season.
