Game 3
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM baseball team finished the 2012 home schedule on a high note, defeating the first-place Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm 1-0 at Weevils Field.
The gusty conditions kept the score low, as the pitching staffs for both teams kept the hit totals in single digits. Chris Guzman went 8.1 innings, holding the GAC-leading Storm to just five hits on the day.
The Weevils (16-25, 5-15 GAC) broke up the scoreless game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Danny Loya drew a walk to start the inning. A Josh Chism single on a hit-and-run landed Loya on third with no outs. That set up Hunter Allday for the sacrifice fly on the next at-bat to give the Weevils the winning run.
Southeastern (29-11, 21-9 GAC) left seven runners stranded on the day, compared to six for the Weevils. James Taylor took the loss, his first of the season, in the start for the Storm. Christian Gallegos came in from short to finish out the top of the ninth.
Chase Stokes got the final out of the inning on a strike from right field to get Brad Shankle by two steps at the plate as Paul Parsels put on the final tag to keep the shutout intact.
The win closes out the home season for the Boll Weevils. They will wrap up the season on the road next weekend as they travel to Weatherford, Oklahoma to take on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs. First pitch in the Saturday double is slated for noon.
