WEEVILS DROP DOUBLEHEADER AT ARKANSAS TECH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 2 | Game 3

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The UAM baseball team dropped a pair of GAC contests this afternoon at Arkansas Tech, falling to the Wonder Boys 7-4 and 7-1.

Josh Chism got the Weevils (15-21, 5-14 GAC) on the board first in the top of the first inning, driving in Christian Gallegos. But one run was the best they could manage, despite having bases loaded with one out. A pop out and a strikeout got the Wonder Boys (18-21, 7-8 GAC) out of the early jam.

Arkansas Tech tied the game in the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles and took the lead with single runs in the second and third innings to go up 3-1. The Weevils battled back, however, in the top of the fourth with three runs to take a 4-3 lead into the late innings.

Hunter Allday led the inning with a single to right followed by a T.J. Cox walk to put two on with no outs for Tyler Walker. The Wonder Boys got Allday at third on the sacrifice bunt attempt for the first out. Chase Stokes flew out to left in the next spot before things got interesting. Justin Hollis struck out swinging for what should have been the third out, but the ATU catcher lost the ball and allowed Hollis to reach first on the error to prolong the inning.

Taylor Eaves made them pay with a double to left that scored Walker and Cox and put Hollis on third. Christian Gallegos put the final Weevils’ run of the game up with a single to right that brought Hollis around, 4-3.
A three-run homerun in the Tech sixth inning, followed by a fourth run in the frame put the game out of reach as the Wonder Boys held on in the final three innings to pull the series even at a game apiece.

Tech left no room for doubt in the rubber match, getting four runs in the bottom of the first inning to put the Weevils a hole from which they would not recover. UAM’s sole offensive bright spot in the final game came in the third inning.

Chase Stokes led the inning with a bunt-single, then stole second and third to put himself in prime position for Taylor Eaves to drive him home with a single to left.

Josh Chism took the loss in game one, giving up all seven ATU runs in seven innings of work. He gave up eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 35 batters faced.  Eddie Smith took the loss in game two, giving up the seven Tech runs on nine hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 23 batters faced.

The Weevils will return to action Tuesday as they travel up to Arkadelphia to take on Ouachita Baptist in a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m.
