EARLY TURNOVERS DOOM BLOSSOMS IN LOSS TO GOLDEN SUNS

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. –
Freshman Jordan Goforth scored 18 points and had eight rebounds to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team in a 73-53 loss to Arkansas Tech Thursday night on the road in Great American Conference action.

The Cotton Blossoms (5-18, 2-15 GAC) were never able to get out of an early hole created by committing seven turnovers in the team’s first eight possessions, allowing the Golden Suns (17-6, 14-3 GAC) to grab a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the game.

ATU grew its lead to above 20 points with 6:53 remaining in the first half before UAM used a 12-2 scoring run to trim the deficit to 12 points at the 2:57 mark.

The Cotton Blossoms made another run in the first five minutes of the second half, using an 11-2 run to get ATU’s lead back down to 12 points with at the 15:42 mark. UAM made its final surge midway through the final half, using a three-pointer from Ashley Qualls at the 9:28 mark to cut the ATU lead to 11 points.

As a team, UAM shot 46 percent from the field (19-of-41), 33 percent on three-pointers (3-of-9) and 57 percent on foul shots (12-of-21). ATU shot 47 percent from the field (27-of-57), 23 percent on three-pointers (3-of-13) and 89 percent on foul shots (16-of-18).

ATU’s Roselis Silva tied Goforth for the game-high in scoring with 18 points.

The Cotton Blossoms are back in action this Saturday at home against Harding for Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
